The Tam Coc boat ride is usually the main event, but returning to the pier does not have to mean the end of your day. If you have one to three hours left, the best next activity depends on how you feel: keep sightseeing, explore the village, or slow down with something local and hands-on.

After spending a long stretch on the river, it is easy to over-plan the rest of the day. Tam Coc works well when you change pace instead: have a drink, walk through the village, or choose one nearby experience that feels different from the boat ride.
If your schedule is tight, staying close to the pier also saves transport time and makes it easier to return to your hotel, bus or dinner plans.
2. Walk into Van Lam Village and discover traditional embroidery
Van Lam is not just the area around the boat station. It is also a traditional embroidery village with a craft history passed down through local families.
Our family has practiced hand embroidery for four generations. Our mother, artisan Dinh Thi Nguyen, has worked with embroidery for more than 50 years and was officially recognized as a traditional hand-embroidery artisan in Ninh Binh in 2015.

3. Try a traditional embroidery workshop — about 400m from the pier
If you have just finished sightseeing and want to actually do something, embroidery gives the afternoon a completely different rhythm.
At our family home, beginners choose an item, design and thread colours, then learn step by step how to prepare the fabric, thread the needle and make basic stitches. You can also see our mother embroidering and look closely at finished hand-embroidered artworks.

Shorter DIY options are also available from 200,000–250,000 VND. Visiting the embroidery display and watching the artisan when she is working are free; no workshop booking is required just to look around.
4. Visit Thai Vi Temple
Thai Vi Temple is a natural cultural stop around Van Lam and fits well after the boat ride if you want somewhere quieter and historically connected to the area. It can be combined with a village walk or bicycle ride rather than treated as another long excursion.
5. Continue to Bich Dong Pagoda
If you still want a classic sightseeing stop, Bich Dong is one of the easiest places to pair with Tam Coc. The pagoda complex is built into the limestone landscape, so the experience is on foot and feels different from seeing the karsts from the river.
Allow time to walk slowly through the three levels rather than trying to squeeze it between too many other attractions.
6. Cycle through the countryside
After sitting in a boat, a gentle bicycle ride can feel especially good. Small roads around Tam Coc connect rice fields, village homes, temples and limestone scenery, and you can stop whenever you see something interesting.
A simple route through Van Lam and toward Bich Dong works well if you want scenery without committing to another major ticketed attraction.
7. Go to Mua Cave if you still want a big viewpoint
Mua Cave is the opposite perspective to the boat ride: instead of looking up at the limestone mountains from the water, you climb for a wide view across the landscape.
This is the more energetic option. On hot afternoons or after a tiring boat trip, a village activity may be more comfortable; if the weather is good and you still have energy, Mua Cave can round out the day.
Choose by how much time you have
About 1 hour: walk around Van Lam, have coffee or tea, visit the embroidery display, or make a short cultural stop.
About 2 hours: join a 60–90 minute embroidery experience, visit Thai Vi, or cycle locally.
3+ hours: combine a slower local activity with Bich Dong, or travel to Mua Cave if you want another major sight.
Local planning tip: do not choose the next stop only because it is famous. After the boat ride, ask what is missing from your day: movement, rest, culture, food, or another viewpoint. Choosing a different type of experience usually makes the day feel less repetitive.
What if it is raining or very hot?
Weather changes the best choice. On a hot or rainy afternoon, a covered cultural activity, café break or embroidery workshop can be easier than another exposed viewpoint. On a cool, clear day, cycling, Bich Dong and Mua Cave become more attractive.
